Who Should Consider Therapy?

Anyone can benefit from therapy to overcome current challenges, understand past experiences that still impact them, develop deeper self-awareness and acceptance, and achieve a range of personal goals. You don’t need a specific diagnosis or “reason” for visiting a therapist, but some of the many things we can help with include:

What happens during therapy?

At The Center for CBT in New York City, your comprehensive therapy plan will be designed to help you achieve your goals. In order to offer these personalized solutions, we take time to get to know each of our clients. During your first session (or the first few visits), your therapist asks questions, reviews your health history and past experience with therapy, discusses your goals, and collaborates with you to design your therapy plan. These first few meetings are like a team project. Your therapist will discuss the plan, and then, you can let them know if anything needs to be changed or added. With a plan in place, we’ll work together to achieve your goals. Our therapists primarily rely on CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) during therapy sessions. This therapy approach helps the people we work with to explore the ways their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors connect. During CBT sessions, people begin to understand the negative consequences of maladaptive thinking, feeling, and acting, and they develop tools and strategies to achieve lasting change. In addition to CBT, our therapists may utilize a range of therapeutic techniques, including somatic experiencing method, which is a therapy approach that helps people process the effects of stress and trauma. Regardless of therapy approach, our therapists will collaboratively reassess your progress throughout your sessions and adjust your therapy plan to ensure you make progress and achieve your specific personal goals.

Is therapy forever?

Almost anyone can benefit from therapy at certain times in their lives, but that doesn’t mean you need to be in therapy forever. Each person is unique, and their therapy plans will also be personalized to help them achieve their goals. Depending on the individual situation, clients may visit with us for a short time (12 to 14 weeks) to process a specific situation. Others are in therapy for longer to resolve complex concerns or work through more challenging situations. We’re here to support your therapy journey – whatever it looks like.
