Who Does Couples and Relationship Therapy Help?

There are many reasons why you may want to consider seeking therapy for relationships, but in most cases, people move forward with relationship therapy for one of three reasons: to start out on the right foot, to sustain a thriving relationship with better communication skills, or start over after difficulties in a relationship. Whether you’re just starting out on your relationship journey or you’ve been together for decades, therapy can help you nurture and maintain a healthy, satisfying relationship.

Divorce Therapy

Divorce doesn’t have to be something you just survive. Instead, this can be your opportunity to thrive. The decision to end your marriage can feel embarrassing, shameful, challenging, or overwhelming. Therapy can help you to change your perspective on divorce, so you can feel free, empowered, joyous, and hopeful about what the future holds. It’s okay to grieve the end of your marriage, but when you’re ready, therapy can help you move forward and live your best post-divorce life.

Relationship Styles

Relationship or attachment styles inform the ways we connect to other people, but understanding attachment styles can be especially important for developing and maintaining fulfilling romantic relationships. From the types of partners you choose to the way you fight and make up, your attachment style will impact all aspects of your relationships. When you understand the ways that relationship styles influence your romantic partnerships, you can work together to create a relationship that feels safe and satisfying.

What can I expect during therapy?

When you begin couples or relationship therapy, you’ll meet together with your therapist to discuss the general goals and concerns in your relationship and develop a plan for your ongoing therapy sessions. Then, your therapist may want to meet with each person one-on-one to ensure the individuals feel heard and are able to express themselves through the therapy process. In the remaining sessions, you’ll meet together with the therapist. During your visits, your therapist may ask you to talk about specific issues, work on communication exercises, or use a variety of therapy techniques to help you develop skills and strategies to improve your relationship together.
